Contact lenses are a fantastic alternative to glasses—they’re invisible, convenient, and great for an active lifestyle. But they also come with a responsibility: proper hygiene. Not cleaning your lenses correctly can lead to serious eye infections, discomfort, or even vision loss.
Here’s a step-by-step guide that every contact lens wearer should follow:
Step 1: Wash Your Hands Thoroughly
Use fragrance-free soap and dry your hands with a lint-free towel. Your fingers come into direct contact with your lenses—so keeping them clean is crucial.
Step 2: Clean Lenses with Solution
Place the lens in your palm, add a few drops of lens solution, and gently rub with your fingertip for about 10 seconds. This removes debris and microorganisms that can’t be rinsed away.
Never use tap water on your lenses—it contains bacteria and can cause dangerous infections.
Step 3: Rinse and Store with Fresh Solution
Rinse both sides of the lens with fresh solution, then store it in a clean lens case filled with new solution. Never reuse old solution or “top up” the case.
Step 4: Clean Your Lens Case
At least once a day, empty the case, rinse it with lens solution (not water), and leave it to air dry upside down. Replace your case every 1–3 months.
Step 5: Stick to Your Replacement Schedule
Whether your lenses are daily, biweekly, or monthly—don’t overwear them. And never sleep in your lenses unless they’re specifically designed for it.
Warning Signs of a Problem:
- Redness or pain
- Excessive tearing
- Light sensitivity
- Blurry or cloudy vision
If you notice any of these, take out your lenses and book an eye test immediately.
Your eyes are precious—don’t take shortcuts with lens care!
